Postcards From the Med More moorings
Plans are afoot to increase the capacity of several Costa Blanca marinas in a bid to cope with the rising number of leisure boaters visiting the area. A huge works project at Alicante Port marina involves dredging the harbour from 33ft (10m) to 46ft (14m) to allow international maritime traffic to use it. There will also be an extension to the existing dock and a big increase in the number of smaller pleasure craft allowed access to and moorings in the port.
The total cost of the project is estimated to be €100 million (approx £68.8 million). A further €19 million (approx £13.1 million) will be invested in three other ports in Alicante province during 2005. Most of the money will be allocated to building over 1,300 moorings in Torrevieja, Santa Pola and Denia.
The new moorings will be very welcome, particularly in Denia, which is becoming increasingly popularwith UK boaters. The majority of the new capacity will be made available to visiting craft. Work is already under way.
Blanca cheque: Alicante has plenty of cash to spend on expansion.
